Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis is a disease of the uterus where the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus (myometrium), proliferates there, and bleeds during menstruation, which can cause very significant problems for women.
Due to the reduced contractility of the uterus, bleeding during menstruation can be very heavy and prolonged, which can also lead to anemia.
Frequently, menstruations are also quite painful, sexual intercourse can also be painful, and in the event of pregnancy, there is also a greater risk of complications (spontaneous abortion, premature birth).
In diagnostics, in addition to a clinical examination (enlarged and sensitive uterus), transvaginal ultrasound in combination with the determination of the CA 125 marker in serum is particularly helpful.
Treatment
The treatment of this disease depends on the patient’s wishes.
In the milder form of the disease, adenomyosis can only be monitored, while in more extensive adenomyosis, hormonal therapy or the insertion of a Mirena IUD is considered due to associated problems.
In the case of a very extensive form of adenomyosis, surgery is often unavoidable; most often, we opt for laparoscopic removal of the uterine body (laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy), and less often for laparoscopic excision of the focus from the uterine wall and its reconstruction.
